CLOTHESLINE STORIES

“Sunflowers [the clothesline] explores what connects us to our past. Where do the things we cherish, use and surround ourselves with come from? What are the stories attached to them, and how do they connect us to other people?”

~ LEANDRA TEJADOR,  ITP Artist & Co-founder VidCode

"The Clothesline is an intriguing way to bind a disparate set of identities. When interviewed, I thought I was telling jokes, but when I saw my face in the sunflowers I felt suddenly public, and plausible, and very human. I think this is a meaningful project in a space that so often focuses on art that will quickly turn to a product.”

“By connecting personal histories to tangible objects and experiences, The Clothesline Project, managed to use technology to connect people on a deeper more intimate level. The team produces their projects through an open and visible process. Their projects are enjoyable both to experience and observe the construction of."

"The Clothesline Project offered an experience that closely connected everyone in the camp, in many ways more so than the broader camp experience. By connecting personal histories to tangible objects and experiences it managed to use technology to connect people on a deeper more intimate level. The team produces their projects through an open and visible process that can be described as refined creative chaos. Their projects are enjoyable both to experience and observe the construction of.”

“I loved seeing that project grow in the gallery room outside my office. Despite becoming curious about the type of stuff I saw coming in and out, I deliberately waited to see how it would all come together.  It was a big step into that room from our tech makerspace to the backyard clothesline in a field of flowers.  The magic of hanging the clothes that then put talking faces on the flowers was even a step further - almost into a hallucination.  I think there is potential to go deeper into a sequence or permutations of thoughts and images for playback on the clothesline. I wish it lived permanently outside my office!”

~ DAN O’SULLIVAN,  Associate Professor - ITP Chair

The image of a clothesline recalls a place and time: connecting the windows of tenements in cities past, or evoking the classic Americana of a mother hanging her wash on the line, her child running through the sheets as they catch the breeze in the sunshine. We are spiraled through time, when we pinch  open a clothespin, and choose hang an item to dry. I cannot wait to experience this immersive installation, and see how a simple line stretched from point to point can stir up so much nostalgia for time gone by.

TUBES

“Tubes is an anonymous experience in which participants try on worm suits and flail around a soft light brown room… You’re among other worms. Music plays and you become either party worms or relaxed worms. Worms worms worms worms worms!”

~ LEANDRA TEJADOR,  ITP Artist & Co-founder VidCode

"Tubes was an absolutely fantastic experience, sensory deprivation with a twist and techno dance all rolled up into a big tube full of fun. A wonderful tactile experience that freed me up to create movements and rhythms all my own!"

~ BILL TUNNICLIFFE,  Filmmaker & Associate Professor TISCH Open Arts
